In October 2013, Ear Nose and Throat physicians, audiologists, nursing and surgical staff from the Omaha medical community will, once again, embark on an annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic, serving children and families at a center established by Creighton University’s Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC). There are countless children in the Dominican Republic that are not able to receive medical care due to their social situation and level of poverty in which they live. On the mission trip, ENT surgeons will examine the children and perform basic ear, nose, and throat surgeries to improve their quality of life. Without these services, the children can suffer from chronic infections, hearing loss, and difficulties breathing. Last year, the team was able to perform 165 surgeries in addition to providing clinical care to over 375 children during our one-week mission (this does not include the 100 patients our audiologists evaluated and fit with hearing aids)! In comparison, the Children’s Hospital in Santiago performs approximately 80 ENT surgeries per year. While the medical team donates 100% of their time and talents, there is still a significant amount of funding required to provide the necessary equipment and care for the children. There are no administrative costs and all services from surgical care to ancillary services are provided via donation.
Coop de Ville & Feathers will be donating 10% of all sales the weekend of August 17 & 18 to this mission. Come out & get a head start on your Christmas shopping while ensuring that a child in the DR can receive needed medical care. Talk about a win:win!!
